Why do Leaves Change Colors?

Even though the weather remains chilly, the recent budding
of the trees announces Spring is coming.

Have you ever wondered why trees have green leaves in spring,
colored leaves in fall, and no leaves in winter?

Throughout the spring and summer, leaves are deep green as they fill with chlorophyll.  Chlorophyll allows plants to absorb life-giving sunlight and turn it into the nutrients the tree needs in order to grow. 
In Fall there is less sunlight so trees begin to
store nutrients for the months ahead.
  Trees will do this by breaking down the green pigments stored in their leaves and moving them to the roots to be ready to use the following spring.

The movement of chlorophyll makes the leaves change to autumn colors
and is the tree’s way of surviving the winter months.
Moving and storing nutrients to the roots allows plants and trees
to regrow in spring like winter never happened.

More than just beautiful to see, this process allows
nurseries to sell bare root deciduous trees, shrubs, and roses in the spring.
