 The Changing Colors of Fall

Have you ever wondered why leaves change color in the fall?

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop; trees begin preparing for winter and their leaves stop producing green pigment called chlorophyll.  Without chlorophyll the leaves no longer capture sunlight and convert it into energy- a process known as photosynthesis. The green shades of chlorophyll  are replaced with yellow and orange pigments called carotenoids and shades of red and purple called anthocyanins, giving the leaves their autumn brilliance.

Without the ability to photosynthesize new energy, the tree must draw the last remaining nutrients from its leaves and begin storing it safely in
the trunk and roots for the cold months ahead. With nothing left to give,
the leaves are no longer needed and soon begin to drop.
As spring returns, the trunk and roots release their stored energy producing new growth, leaves, and shoots - seemingly out of nowhere.

And so, the cycle begins again...
